Apple has pulled its most recent watchOS 11.1 beta 3 update after users reported instances of their Apple Watches “locking up.” Citing X user and MacRumors contributor Aaron Paris, 9to5mac reports that the new beta 3 update has been officially canceled. The update was released just two days ago.
Users report Apple Watch devices getting bricked
According to Paris, MacRumors forum members and Reddit users began reporting message notification issues and Apple Watch devices freezing immediately after installing the beta 3 update. These issues persisted even after rebooting, rendering the devices effectively unusable.
If you’re an Apple Watch user enrolled in the developer program, this is bad news. It’s also a disturbing trend that’s been prevalent with recent Apple updates.
A few weeks ago, the rollout of iPadOS 18 created a frenzy as many people reported that the OS was bricking their M4 iPad Pro. Furthermore, a recent HomePod beta update also had similar issues. Apple has since withdrawn both updates, although the company is still working to provide patches for each.
No restore option without Apple’s intervention
Unfortunately, currently, there is no way to roll back Apple Watch firmware. If you’re experiencing issues, you’ll probably need to visit an authorized Apple service provider or schedule an appointment at your local Apple Store to have your firmware reset. In the worst case scenario, you may have to send your device to a repair facility. Neither of these options seem particularly convenient for users.
There’s also been a lot of speculation about what causes the freezes. Some people indicated that the software was causing Messages to stop working due to it taking too long to load, and others were suggesting that Screen Time was somehow responsible for it. Apple has not yet formally announced a cause. Some users say that disabling Messages notifications can provide a temporary solution. However, the accuracy of this solution is still a matter of debate.
General users should not be worried
On the positive side, the beta 3 update is only available for users who are currently enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. This means that if you are not listed as a developer, you have nothing to worry about. It should not have any effect on your Apple Watch. If you are not sure whether you are enrolled as a developer or not, we have previously discussed how this program is different from public users.
Even if you are a developer, you should not have any issues as long as you have not installed the beta 3 update. WatchOS 11.1 beta 3 is no longer available for download. However, if you are one of the unlucky ones who are experiencing problems, you should contact Apple and ask the company to provide some additional guidance.
